Vertical blinds look like lengths of fabric attached to a sliding track. The blinds are weighted to ensure even distribution and that a chain at their bottom joins them. The vanes can turn and tilt depending on the privacy or light you need. They can be pulled back completely to allow more sunlight into the room.
Vertical blinds are available in a variety of colors, patterns, and textures. You can make them from a variety of fabrics and materials like vinyl or PVC and adjust them to fit any size window, even those with non-standard sizes. These shades are also energy efficient and require less maintenance than horizontal blinds.
Panel glide blinds are a stylish alternative to vertical blinds. These panels are made from fabric panels and offer privacy and light blocking. These panels are great if you prefer to hide from the sun and avoid direct sunlight. They can be installed on large windows or sliding doors but can also be used to divide rooms.
Before installing, you must decide whether you want to mount vertical blinds on the outside or inside. This mount will determine the final appearance of the blinds. It also determines how much light is reflected.
The inside mount allows blinds to be fitted inside the window recess and on the frame. This creates a minimalistic appearance that allows for more light to enter and allows for more light to pass through. An outside mount allows blinds to be installed on the architrave or wall above the window. This gives the illusion of a larger window while providing better light blocking.
How to correctly install vertical blinds
Vertical blinds hang differently depending on their design and mount options. The installation comprises key components that can be used with virtually all models of vertical blinds.
Step 1 – Decide on an outside or inside mount
It is best to decide whether you want an outside or inside mount before you buy the blinds. For better coverage, outside mounting requires larger blinds, while inside mounting requires a precise measurement to ensure the blinds fit on the window frame.
An inside mount is recommended if the window recess can accommodate the blinds. An outside mount is also recommended if the window recess is too small or if any obstacles, such as handles and window cranks, could interfere with blind operation.
Step 2 – Measure the area that the blinds will cover
After you have chosen your mount style, measure the space. If you have decided to mount your windows or sliding doors inside, use your measuring tape to measure the recess from the edge. Add 5 cm to each side for full coverage if you have chosen an outside mount.
Tip: Because not all windows are the same size, measure multiple spots along the lengths or widths. Use the shorter measurements for an inside mount. For an outside mount, you can add a few centimeters.
Step 3 – Mark the points for the brackets
Mark the locations where brackets will be placed. This will be on the window frame or the architrave/wall for an inside mount. To ensure that your marks are accurate, use a measuring tape.
Tip: Some blinds include a valance. This should be attached to the inside mount or later to an outside mount.
Step 4 – Drill the brackets in
Then, drill the holes through the marks. Next, attach the brackets. For easier screwing and stronger brackets, we recommend an impact driver.
Ensure the brackets are correctly positioned and leveled using your leveling device. This is necessary for outside mounts but can be skipped if the mount is inside. The window frame is often already leveled.
Step 5 – Fit the headrail into the brackets
The front of the headrail must be inserted into the brackets’ groove. Tilt the back of it up to attach the headrail to the brackets. Depending on the length of the window and the headrail, you may need to use an additional pair of hands.
Step 6 – Hook up the curtain pieces (vanes).
You are now ready to hang the vanes. You don’t have to face them in the same direction. Push the ends of the vanes into the clips to attach them. Attach a vane to the clips and gently pull it down until it is in place.
Step 7 – Add the blind wand to the child safety device
The blind wand can be hung on the headrail. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to install the child safety device. Mount it high enough to prevent children from reaching it.
Tip: If your blinds were installed using the outside mount option, and the model you purchased includes a valance, it is now time to attach it. Attach the valance to the clips by securing it to the headrail.
Step 8: Test your new blinds
After you have installed your blinds, testing them to ensure they are working properly is important. Here are a few steps to follow:
- Use the blind wand to draw the blinds back. The wand should be able to move the blinds smoothly and easily. If there is any resistance, you may need to adjust the blinds or the mounting hardware.
- Slide the blinds back and forth. The vanes should be open when you do this. If the vanes are closed, you could damage them.
- Check the blinds for any damage. Make sure the slats are straight and that there are no cracks or tears. If you see any damage, you may need to replace the blinds.
By following these steps, you can ensure that your blinds are working properly and that they will last for many years to come.
